Trip itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Dades Gorge
This excursion to the Merzouga desert can begin anywhere in Marrakech: at the airport, or at any other point in the Red City, such as your hotel. Our driver/guide will meet you there and take you in a comfortable vehicle during the tour.
We Will cross the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi N’tichka pass, which provides unrivaled vistas of the mountain range’s snow-capped summits from autumn to spring. The first major destination on this day will be the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has served as a filming setting for major films and television series (Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones).
We will continue on our trip to Ouarzazate, where we will continue our route-finding to Skoura, which is located in the midst of the Valley of Palm Trees, a wide and labyrinthine oasis whose exuberant flora covers valuable secret kasbahs that can be visited.
We will next travel via the Valley of the Roses (renowned for its rose production) to the Dades Valley, where we will see the Dades Gorges. Dinner and a night on the banks of the Dades River.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Merzouga Desert Erg Chebbi
After breakfast, we will continue along the banks of the Boumalne, where a road lined with Kasbahs (citadels) and Ksour (fortresses or castles) opens, with an ocher, red, and mauve landscape. We’ll be surrounded by stony plateaus where camels graze.
We will arrive to Tineghir (where the beautiful Todra gorges are located) at 1,350 m. altitude and surrounded by a palm grove after a journey full of ksour, oasis, and palm trees. We proceed towards Erfoud (fossil city) and, after passing via Rissani, arrive in Merzouga, in front of the high dunes of Erg Chebbi. Dinner and the night are spent in camp tents.
Day 3: Merzouga desert tour
We awoke before dawn to watch the sunrise breakfast and returned to the village we left to surround the Erg Chebbi, an extension mass of sand dunes and the highest in Morocco, more than 250 meters high, was the route of the famous Rally of the old Paris-Dakar, the mountains in the background are the Algerian borders, a stop at the Tissardmine oasis is mandatory, and we continue to a nomadic settlement where we will learn some secrets of its life.
We continue to Khamlia, a Mali-speaking town, where we toast with tea while watching a brief live performance of Gnawa music. Return to the lodge for lunch, then spend the afternoon climbing the dunes and enjoying a lovely sunset.
Day 4: Merzouga – Fez
After breakfast, we depart for Rissani, where we will visit the typical Berber suq and the ruined Kasbah of Sijilmassa. We leave Rissani and go through the Ziz Valley, stopping briefly for panoramic views before arriving in Errachidia. Then we proceed to Fes, passing through Medilt, Azrou, and Ifrane until we arrive in Fes in the evening or at night. Lovely Riad for the night. (The only thing included is breakfast.)
